Beyoncé might be better known for her music, but her new whisky brand - SirDavis - is making waves across the globe as people go Crazy in Love to try a drink approved by the legendary singer.
Just this weekend, Queen Bey and her husband JAY-Z hosted an elaborate dinner party to celebrate the launch. Celebrities like Kelly Rowland were in attendance, in addition to whisky royalty Dr. Bill Lumsden, head of whisky creation at Glenmorangie and Ardbeg. He was involved in the creation of SirDavis, and gave a guided tasting to the honoured guests.
Unfortunately for us the menu was very hush hush, but seemed to include signature whisky cocktails that are thankfully listed on the company website. It looked to be an extravagant affair, and we can only hope to get an invite next time. Typically, we would roll our eyes at yet another shameless celebrity product launch - but SirDavis peaked our interest from the beginning thanks to the taste-focused development and fascinating backstory.
This story began with Beyoncé’s grandad, who was one of the most prolific moonshiners during Prohibition. He used to fill hollowed out trees with the fermented and distilled liquids that he would create - cleverly sharing the love of spirits and whisky to his friends and family. His name was Davis Hogue, which is forever enshrined on the label of this new release.

But now for the good stuff - what’s it made of?
Well, it’s a 51% rye and 49% barley whisky. A marriage of Beyoncé’s American tastes and Bill Lumsden’s Scotch expertise. It is twice matured, and finished in traditional Pedro Ximenez sherry casks.
As a result, it has strong, spicy flavours on the nose - with cardamom, clove and ginger taking the stage with an aroma typical of rye whisky. Thanks to the sherry finish, a fruitiness shines through in what the official website describes as ‘Tangy Seville oranges’.
This flows into a beautiful toffee and demerara taste in the palate - echoes of the Scotch tradition that has been infused - before moving into those spicy flavours that you were teased with on the nose. This is followed by malty, biscuity notes that carry a light citrus to your amazed mouth.
The finish is that of ripe cherries, plump sultanas and honey, flavours which lend themselves well to the fruity SirDavis cocktails. It’s been winning award after award - and shows no sign of stopping!
It’s greatest achievement? That it only allowed me to get one Beyoncé related pun in!
