I Want to Wear Cowboy Boots
A Spotlight on Steelbound Distillery
It’s one of my life’s dreams. No irony, just some snakeskin, maybe a little strut. But I can’t. I live in England and it’s not possible. The level of judgment I’d receive, I’d be outcast, shipped to Australia probably. Out of fear, here I am - bootless. You know who doesn’t have any fear?
Americans. They don’t just do things, they overdo. You want to talk about pioneers? You want to talk about pushing an industry? A distillery that doesn’t make one spirit – but 30. A brewery that doesn’t just make a few beers, they make 40. Today we’re talking about Steelbound.
Quick aside - the term pub comes from public house. So, in the dark ages, you could make beer, but you couldn’t store beer. In small villages, each family would take it in turns to make their beer and have everyone over to drink it before it went bad. And their house would become the ‘public house’. For many years it was the traditional practice for pubs to make their own beers in-house. Quick another-aside.
An aside from the aside. In Scotland, when they make whisky the leftover malt sediment after fermentation is fed to cattle. So when you’re drinking your whisky, with your steak dinner, it’s a circular economy. The complete use of all products. Combine these and you get Steel Bound. It isn’t a distillery per se. Nor is it a brewery. It’s both.
Something Americans do better than anyone is dream. But while the rest of us keep it as just a dream, Americans pursue. Steelbound was founded by Bill Bursee, a man with vision and a relentless pursuit of perfection. He’s not dreaming anymore.

But before you think it, this is no brash upstart. They’re acclaimed. I mean pretty damn acclaimed. Best of the Best, Best Whisky, Best Straight Bourbon at the Los Angeles Invitational Wine and Spirits Challenge acclaimed.
The distillery itself is a sight to behold. Steel clad. It stands like a fortress of tradition and innovation. Its copper stills gleam like polished mirrors, reflecting the light of the sun that streams through the windows.
Bill is a perfectionist, and he insisted on using only the finest ingredients. But the thing that truly sets Steelbound apart is its barrels. Made from American white oak, each barrel is charred to the perfect degree and imparts a unique flavour to the bourbon as it is aged. The rich, amber liquid, with notes of caramel, vanilla, and a hint of smoke, captivates in every sip.
Word of Steelbound's exceptional bourbon is spreading far and wide, and soon, it will be a staple in establishments across the country. Despite their success, the heart of Steelbound remains the same: a dedication to crafting the finest bourbon, using traditional methods and the highest quality ingredients.
Steelbound is more than a business; it’s an experience. An experience of tradition, craftsmanship, and enduring spirit. There, amidst the copper stills and oak barrels, you’ll find a piece of the pioneering spirit, and perhaps, a bit of your own.
